Back to school time!
The Allergy Table offers safe & tasty treats for all students and helps to inspire inclusiveness.
Back when I was a teacher, I remember the students who had to sit out during classroom parties and field trips because of food allergies. I remember parents coming to my classroom in tears because their children could not have the cookies or cupcakes that another parent brought in for a holiday or birthday celebration with no consideration for their child. Back then, there weren’t as many options for safe treats. Food allergies have become more prevalent in our schools and in our communities and ultimately has created a need for a business like ours. We strive to work with schools and teachers to nurture inclusiveness in the classroom.
My business began when my son, who lives with over 20 food allergies was going on a field trip to a local cider mill. This terrified me for so many reasons. That fear soon turned into frustration. There was no consideration for my son’s food allergies and there were no provisions made to include him in the cider mill field trip. That frustration quickly turned into determination to create a cider mill style donut that would allow my son to feel included in his field trip instead of sitting on the sidelines watching his friends enjoy a treat that he could not have.
After many (many) failed attempts at creating a traditional cider mill donut, I finally found the winning combination. I gave my son a donut to try before his field trip and he absolutely loved it. I made a half dozen for him to take with him on the field trip and it brought so much joy and relief to my heart that he could sit with his friends and enjoy a delicious donut without feeling like an outcast. After the field trip, I started getting calls from other parents asking where I found allergen friendly donuts? I explained that I developed my own recipe and the parents started asking if I could make donuts for their kids who live with food allergies. By filling that one important need, a business was born.
After the success of my cider mill donuts – I started experimenting with other recipes to create traditional favorites such as cupcakes, cookies and cakes. Up until this point, my son had never tasted a birthday cake or cupcake. With every successful recipe, I was giving my son a new way to be included in celebrations. We no longer had to stay home when he was invited to a birthday party, we could attend school functions when cookies were being served and I had the peace of mind that he had a safe alternative to enjoy.
Our mission is to provide safe and delicious alternatives to our traditional favorites and to inspire inclusiveness. With this in mind, we want to invite all schools and classrooms to celebrate inclusiveness by taking advantage of our school specials that are available throughout the year.
